Durres and the taste of Albanian cognac – a Polish-guided tour full of history and aromas
Part of our optional tours for Poles, guided in Polish, departing from Durres, Golem, and Mali Robit. Around 8:30 AM, the coach picks up participants from their hotels. This is how the tour begins, combining a visit to Durres with a trip to a unique cognac factory.
After a short journey, we arrive in the city center. The coach stops at the port, and from there, we set off on a walking tour of Durres’ most important attractions.
A city with over 2600 years of history
Durres is the second-largest city in Albania. Approximately 300,000 people live here. The city also serves as the country’s largest seaport. Its history dates back to 625 BC, making it one of the oldest urban centers in the region.
We begin our walk from the seaside promenade. From here, there’s a view of King Zog’s palace, located on the highest hill. The freshly renovated waterfront with wide avenues also catches the eye.
Next, we head towards the impressive college building. Along the way, we pass the Venetian tower, built during the rule of the Venetian Republic. Its style resembles the architecture known from Dubrovnik.
Ancient walls and an antique theater
Further along the route, we follow the Byzantine defensive walls. They once surrounded the entire city, and today they stand as a testament to its history. Durres has grown significantly, but the walls are still impressive.
The next stop is the amphitheater from the 2nd century AD. In its heyday, it could accommodate up to 20,000 spectators. Today, it is one of the city’s most important attractions.
After this dose of history, we head through the streets of Durres to the local fruit and vegetable bazaar. Here, tourists can buy homemade olive oil and other regional products. Afterward, an hour of free time is scheduled.
Visit to the cognac factory
After the break, we return to the coach and head to the outskirts of the city. There, the largest and oldest alcohol factory in Albania awaits us. It was established in 1930 as a joint initiative of an Albanian and an Italian family. The plant operated as a private company, then was nationalized, and today it is privately owned again.
The factory produces various types of alcohol. Among them are red and white wines, orange liqueur, and the most famous product – Skënderbeu cognac.
Tour, tasting, and shopping
During the visit, we learn about the entire production process. We tour the production line and the cellars where the alcohol matures. Then we proceed to the tasting room, where we sample all available beverages. Additionally, the hosts serve traditional Albanian snacks.
Finally, we have the opportunity to purchase alcohol at prices lower than in stores. This is a perfect opportunity for an original gift or a souvenir from Albania.
Return to hotels
Around 2:00 PM, we return to the hotels. After the tour, you’ll be left not only with a stock of flavors and aromas but also with many memories from one of Albania’s oldest cities.
