Qeparo – Albania’s Underrated Gem

Qeparo Then and Now – The Transformation of a Small Village

For a long time, Qeparo was an underappreciated place that I heard about from a Polish friend who has lived in Albania for over 12 years. Her first visit to this village took place about a decade ago, before then-ruling Edi Rama introduced his Rilindja (Renaissance) program. Back then, Qeparo was a small, forgotten village located almost at the end of the world – with just one small piece of beach and practically nothing else.

Now – A Perfect Holiday Destination

Today, Qeparo is experiencing a true renaissance and has become an excellent holiday destination. I visited this place last year and was completely enchanted by its charm. Edi Rama’s government program included building new squares and promenades in many Albanian cities, including Qeparo. The promenade, built right along the seafront, stretches among palm and olive trees and offers stunning sea views.

Origin of the Name – A Symbol of Nature

The village’s name comes from the Albanian word “qeparo,” meaning cypress. It’s a natural reference to the surrounding nature that enchants every visitor in Qeparo.

Holidays Surrounded by Nature – Perfect Place for Relaxation

Today, Qeparo is a place where anyone can spend an unforgettable week of vacation by the sea, surrounded by undisturbed nature. During the season, many restaurants operate here, serving delicious food. The only drawback is the seasonal tourist intensity, which significantly decreases in late May and September, when the village becomes quiet, peaceful, and perfect for a crowd-free vacation.

Nearby Attractions – Himara and Porto Palermo

Just a few minutes’ drive separates Qeparo from the beautiful town of Himara, which I’ve already described on the blog. The famous Porto Palermo is also nearby and worth visiting. For those seeking entertainment and nightlife during the season, popular nightclubs are available about 20 minutes from Qeparo.

Old Qeparo – History on the Hill

It’s also worth seeing the old part of Qeparo, situated on a hill about 400 meters above sea level. This location had its historical justification – cities were often built high to protect against enemies. Around St. Thomas Church stretches this historic part of the village, now inhabited by few residents. Car access is possible, making sightseeing easier.

Summary – Qeparo for Summer Vacation

In summary, Qeparo is a place I heartily recommend for a holiday retreat. Its beautiful views, access to the sea, and peaceful atmosphere allow everyone to recharge their batteries and enjoy authentic Albania.
